βSheriffβ is a worn-down spelling of shire-reeve β the king's chief officer in a county, and above all his tax collector. From 1068 the High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire held Nottingham Castle, enforced brutal forest law over Sherwood, and squeezed the Crown's revenue out of everyone below him.
That's why he became Robin Hood's archetypal enemy: his real job β collecting taxes and hunting outlaws β put him structurally against ordinary people. In the oldest surviving ballads he has no name at all. He is pure office.
The real ones were worse than the legend. Philip Marc, sheriff under King John, was so loathed he was named personally in Magna Carta (1215) among the officials the king was forced to remove β his rule summed up as βrobbery, false arrest, unjust disseisin.β
In Disney's 1973 telling, Prince John triples the taxes the moment a song wounds his pride β and the Sheriff does the collecting. He shakes the last coins out of a poor man's leg cast. He pockets a child's birthday money. He empties the church poor box. Robin Hood takes from the rich and gives to the poor. The Sheriff takes from the poor and feeds his greed. $SHERIFF makes the villain the mascot.
The brokerage Robinhood is named after the outlaw β βthe Robin Hood of finance, for the little guy.β Take from the rich, give to the poor. That was the promise.
Critics say it plays the Sheriff instead: ~70% of revenue from payment for order flow β the invisible toll on every βfreeβ trade β and, in January 2021, the buy button pulled on GameStop. The tax never left. It just changed its name to a spread.
So the polarity flips twice. In July 2026 Robinhood launched its own chain β and the first thing it minted wasn't stocks, it was memes. A Sheriff of Nottingham token whose one promise is βI keep all the taxesβ is the punchline the whole ecosystem wrote itself.
